Healesville, Victoria
Healesville lies at the eastern end of the Yarra Valley wine area and the commencement of the heavily forested Black Spur mountainous region that includes the Maroondah Dam further to its east. Nearby is the highly respected Healsville Sanctuary that draws crows all year round, young or old to see some great examples of Australian wildlife. Of key renown, is its Bird Aviaries and daily shows of eagles, hawks falcons and other large birds of prey. That is adjacent to Badgers Creek, a popular picnic spot about 8kms south of Healesville, that houses an historic open aquaduct that links the local weir to other dams within the catchment area. Healesville also has a lovely country horse racing club, and the racecourse makes for a tremendous picnic raceday visit. Surrounded by Mt St Leonard, close, to its north, and The Spur to the east, Healesville falls gently towards the Yarra Valley area, and as such is a long time well presented market garden for strawberries and similar, leading out to the vast array of vineyards in the valley. |
